Too Heavy for Half Time Super Bowl Special

Metallica played their hometown on Super Bowl Saturday in a sell-out “night before” show at AT&T Park in San Francisco on the 6th of February 2016.  With the NFL known for billing vanilla pop acts at halftime during the Sunday playoffs, Metallica’s aptly coined “Too Heavy for Half Time” show was a fitting fanfare for the weekend games.

Staged outdoors with no roof covering to speak of, laser specialists, ER Productions, custom designed 83 rain covers for each individual laser just in case the heavens opened. Laserblades, Beamburst and Phaenon lasers were used in combination with a selection of smoke and haze machines to complete the atmospheric effects.

Thankfully, the band and audience were only showered in a hail of lasers and music, which included some of the band’s iconic numbers including “Creeping Death” “For Whom the Bell Tolls” & “The Unforgiven”.
Marc Webber from ER Productions said of the show "Using laser equipment outdoors is not without its difficulties but when faced with a stage that has no roof in the winter months, the challenge is taken to a new level.

We went to great lengths preparing custom made waterproof covers for each and every fixture. Naturally, we had 5 days of beautiful sunshine and not a drop of rain in the sky.”
